In-universe they’re less likely to get bogged down than a wheeled vehicle , and aren’t affected by local gravitational irregularities like repulsolift vehicles . Beyond that, Rule of Cool applies.

None really. Lucas could see the cargo docks across the bay in Alameda from his office window at Lucas Ranch. He got the inspiration from the cranes that winched the containers around. At least that’s the story I heard when I worked out there.

Yeah, the  tragedy of the Disney buyout was the loss of Lucas’s planned Trequel of 3 films dedicated largely to the biochemistry of midi-chlorians... I’m sure it would have made riveting film history.
